FROM TREE TO TREE
FLOCK TO FLOCK
THE FIRE NEVER DIED
Bounding through the sagebrush steppe where Clark's nutcrackers and sage thrashers hop and linger, amber flames cast a light haze through the high desert. But there is no destruction, there is no remorse; the woodrats and the pika hide away in the basalt outcroppings, and the fleeing insects become a bountiful harvest for the flycatchers and sparrows. The oldest of the gnarled juniper stay safe from the flames, tucked away in the comfort offered by basalt. The flames can barely reach the base of their trunks. The cycle goes on. Ahahah! Ahahah! Cries the pinyon jays, all in their cerulean glory as they jump from juniper to juniper- but the flocks grow smaller, and the desert loses another voice. |
